English Cottage Garden in Fortuna, Ca

Crafted from premium redwood, doug fir, and cedar; this project combines high-quality materials with a one-of-a-kind design, showcasing the possibilities of custom landscaping.

A New Perspective

Every home deserves an entrance that reflects its unique character. This project in McKinleyville, CA, was a collaboration with a homeowner seeking to transform their yard with a fence and gate that was both functional and a work of art. At Green Sun Landscaping, we specialize in bringing these visions to life, building custom designs that stand apart from the standard.

Crafting a Custom Sunburst Design

The centerpiece of this project is the custom sunburst gate. Instead of a typical, flat fence, we meticulously designed and handcrafted a gate that serves as a sculptural focal point. The radial lines not only provide a striking visual but also add structural integrity, demonstrating our commitment to designs that are both beautiful and built to last. The matching pergola top was designed to tie the entire fence line together, adding an architectural element that provides a unique experience.

Each spoke was carefully cut and fitted to create a clean, elegant arc.
This custom design is a perfect example of how we push the boundaries of traditional fencing to create a truly personalized result.

Built for Beauty and Longevity in Northern California

We chose premium redwood for this part of the project, a material known for its natural beauty, durability, and resistance to decay. In the specific climate of McKinleyville and the surrounding area, using the right material is crucial. Redwood not only weathers beautifully over time but also stands up to the coastal elements, ensuring a long-lasting investment for the homeowner.

The Process

Laying the Foundation:

The strength of any fence begins underground. Our first step was ensuring a rock-solid foundation for the posts

+ We dug post holes to a depth of 24 inches, ensuring we reached below the frost line for stability and uplift resistance.

+ Once the holes were ready, we placed the 4x4 pressure-treated posts into the holes. We chose pressure-treated lumber for the posts as it provides maximum resistance against rot and insects, which is essential when the wood is in direct contact with the ground and exposed to moisture.

+ The holes were then filled with high-strength concrete mix, carefully securing the posts in place.

+ We used temporary bracing to hold the posts perfectly vertical while the concrete cured.

Framing the Structure: With the posts secured, we moved on to creating the structural frame that the fence boards would attach to. We installed the horizontal rails, ensuring the posts and rails formed a perfectly level and plumb structure. Throughout this step, a level was used continuously to ensure the top and bottom rails were parallel to the ground and each post was vertical. This is crucial for a professional, uniform look.

Adding the Cedar Boards:
For the fence cladding, we selected a premium material that offers both aesthetic appeal and natural durability.

+ We used planed cedar dogtail boards. Planed boards result in a smooth finish that takes stain beautifully and minimizes splinters.

Installation: The cedar boards were attached vertically to the horizontal rails.  The dog-ear cut on the top of the boards provides a classic, finished look.

+ Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insects, making it an excellent choice for a fence exposed to the elements. The natural variation in color adds texture and warmth to the property.

The Finishing Touch: The final structural detail was added to unify the fence line and provide a clean, finished appearance at ground level.

The Kicker Board: A continuous board (sometimes called a "rot board" or "bottom rail") was installed at the very bottom of the fence.

+ This kicker board serves to seal off the bottom gap between the fence and the ground, preventing debris and small animals from passing underneath, while simultaneously adding more support to the vertical pickets and unifying the fence visually.
